Unemployment

Unemployment Benefits Reminder

As an hourly teacher you are eligible for unemployment benefits in the summer. If your hours are substantially reduced during the summer you are eligible for partial benefits. You are also eligible for full benefits during the break before the fall and any breaks through out the year. You are eligible for these benefits because you are considered temporary employees.

Here's what you should write on your unemployment papers.

Make sure you write that you are a temporary, part-time employee who has been laid off for lack of work. If you have an assignment for the fall, write that you have a tentative assignment for the fall semester and that your assignment may be withdrawn at the District's discretion at the last minute because of funding, enrollment, or other changes.

You should also mention your entitlement to benefits under the case of Cervisi v. California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (1989) 256 Cal.Rptr. 142. The Cervisi decision states, "an assignment that is contingent on enrollment, funding , or program changes is not a 'reasonable assurance' of employment.

If you haven't applied yet, you can do so online.

If you need to make an appeal or have any other questions, call Ron Jackson at the CFT Office (510.832.8812).
